The Petition to Stop ISO 29119

“Dissent is the native activity of the scientist, and it has got him into a good deal of trouble in the last years. But if that is cut off, what is left will not be a scientist. And I doubt whether it will be a man.”Jacob Bronowski

If you care about craftsmanship in testing or about software quality in general, stop reading this and go sign the petition to stop ISO Standard 29119 from being published in its entirety. If you need more information about why you should sign the petition, watch James Christie dismantling of standards in general from his talk at the AST CAST 2014, “Standards – promoting quality or restricting competition?”

And if THAT is not enough for you to sign the petition, you should watch this interview with Karen Johnson on her views as a skilled tester and what 29119s implications our for our craft.

There are now over 4 times as many professional software testers who have signed the petition than there were people involved in the development of the working group! That very fact alone means that 29119 cannot claim consensus and possibly be the “internationally-recognised and agreed standards for software testing

Opportunity to raise your voice as a professional does not always present itself in so clear of a way, and we have one here to form a body of work that demonstrates dissent. Do not wait until you have to answer for yourself through industrial or regulatory pressure  about why your testing is not compliant with the standard, and at the very least, help us give an alternative to shameless marketing and consultancy.

So please, take a minute and get informed on the topic and do something to protect our craft and the value skilled testing provides to our clients.

I signed it, now you!
